Moscow.-<\/em><\/strong> The president of Russia<\/a>, Vladimir Putin, came out today in defense of the former Armenian leader Robert Kocharyan, who was detained last week in Yerevan as part of an investigation into money laundering and abuse of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Russia has not forgotten your personal contribution to the development of friendly and allied relations between our countries,” says a telegram from Putin to Kocharyan, released by the Kremlin, on the occasion of the Armenian ex-president’s 72nd birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin wished good health and spiritual strength to Kocharyan in the face of the “challenges” he faces together with his family, one of whose members was also detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, the Armenian justice system issued a two-month preventive arrest warrant against Kocharyan, who was detained along with his son, Sedrak, on August 25 by Armenian authorities, who conducted searches of their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had a verbal confrontation with Levon Kocharyan, another son of the former president and member of the opposition Armenia party, who accused the prime minister of being a “traitor” who finished off Artsakh (the Armenian name for Nagorno-Karabakh).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pashinyan, for his part, demanded that Kocharyan’s son justify the origin of his millionaire fortune. In response, Kocharyan accused Pashinyan of despotism and pointed out that “this contradicts European standards, democracy”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin is expected to meet with Pashinyan on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan, a meeting in which both leaders plan to address, among other issues, Armenia’s rapprochement with the European Union and the arrests of politicians in the Caucasian country who are close to Moscow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
