Naomi Osaka once again turned heads at a Grand Slam, this time drawing inspiration from NBA legend Allen Iverson for her US Open debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The four-time Grand Slam champion arrived for her first-round match against Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova wearing a hooded white gown featuring newspaper headlines highlighting moments from her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Underneath, Osaka revealed an all-black basketball-inspired outfit, complete with a red-and-black headband and elbow sleeves reminiscent of those worn by Iverson during his NBA career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Osaka went on to defeat world No. 101 Zakharova 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3) in a tightly contested opening-round match in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the match, Osaka explained that her look was inspired by Iverson, who is widely credited with helping reshape the relationship between basketball and fashion during the late 1990s and early 2000s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“He’s a trailblazer. I think he’s also someone that I look up to a lot, because he’s done a lot in fashion, whether it’s on purpose or not,” Osaka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She added that Iverson helped change how NBA players dressed and influenced the broader conversation around clothing, sports and personal expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
