A federal immigration operation in New Jersey ended Wednesday in a pursuit and traffic crash that injured the wife of a nearby mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident began around 7:30 a.m. on September 2, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents stopped a vehicle near Route 130 in North Brunswick, according to local authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The driver initially stopped but then accelerated to flee from federal agents, ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vehicle that was struck was driven by Penelope Cohen, the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen<\/strong>. Cohen, a dermatologist, suffered a leg injury and was taken to a local hospital. Authorities said her injuries were not life-threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After the crash, the driver being pursued abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. Federal agents arrested him shortly afterward. He also received medical attention following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The North Brunswick Police Department clarified that its officers were not involved in the initial ICE operation or the pursuit. According to municipal authorities, federal agents had stopped the vehicle before the driver decided to flee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Route 130, one of the area’s major roads, was partially closed for more than an hour while authorities investigated the crash, causing significant morning traffic delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As of Wednesday afternoon, ICE and the Department of Homeland Security had not publicly identified the detained man or explained why agents were attempting to arrest him. Authorities had also not released details about his immigration status or potential charges related to the flight and crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The incident comes amid an increase in immigration enforcement operations in New Jersey.
