La Paz<\/strong>.- The death toll from the two explosions that occurred on Friday at a military barracks in Bolivia rose to six, following the discovery in the last few hours of three more bodies amidst the rubble, and there are eleven people who have still not been located, the Ministry of Defense reported this Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That institution indicated in a press release that three of the victims were identified as soldiers Wilson Copa Mamani, Gabriel Choque Alanoca, and Arnel Rub\u00e9n Flores Poma, while the other three deceased are “in the process of identification<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, there were two explosions due to causes that are being investigated at the General Maintenance Center of the ‘Bol\u00edvar’ RAM-2 Mechanized Artillery Regiment in Viacha, a municipality located on the high plateau, about 35 kilometers from the city of La Paz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the deaths, eleven soldiers remain missing and at least 84 people were reported injured, along with material damage to the barracks and neighboring homes, whose occupants were temporarily evacuated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister of Defense, Ernesto Justiniano, confirmed this Sunday that, according to the preliminary report, there were two detonations, one of which allegedly involved black powder corresponding to pyrotechnic material stored in the sector, according to his office’s press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second explosion was of a magnitude “considerably greater and its cause has not yet been technically determined<\/strong>“, the note adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justinian pointed out that search and recovery efforts continue and that “there are still affected sites, materials that must be reviewed by specialists, and compromised structures<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the eve, authorities reported that ‘boosters’ were found in the barracks, which, as explained by a Police expert, are an “explosive multiplier<\/strong>“, meaning that “upon coming into contact with another explosive that detonates, it will multiply its charge”, which would explain the “type of detonation<\/strong>” that occurred, the expert indicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

War material was also removed<\/strong> that was found in another warehouse of the regiment that suffered damage from the explosions, so the authorities alerted the inhabitants of Viacha that it is still not safe to approach the area<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation into this event, for the alleged crimes of “manslaughter, negligent injury, and other damages<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ombudsman’s Office and several political leaders requested that the investigation be agile and transparent and that the corresponding aid be provided to all those affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement released on Saturday, the United Nations System in Bolivia expressed its solidarity with the affected families and its “readiness to support” the authorities in a “timely response to the needs<\/strong>” of those who are currently “in a situation of greater vulnerability<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
