Haiti has urged the international community to strengthen its support to help restore security, organize elections and revive the country’s economy amid a severe crisis fueled by armed gang violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foreign Affairs and Worship Minister Raina Forbin made the appeal during a ministerial meeting of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Forbin highlighted the importance of strengthening Haiti’s strategic partnership with Africa and called for the renewal of the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), made up primarily of African countries including Chad, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister noted that the mission’s mandate expires at the end of September and called for its full deployment. Currently, about 450 officers from Chad<\/strong> are in Haiti, out of the 5,500 personnel<\/strong> originally planned for the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Insecurity remains one of the main obstacles to the country’s recovery. Armed gangs control large areas of Port-au-Prince and maintain a strong presence in other parts of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to United Nations figures, violence left at least 3,050 people dead and 1,401 injured during the first six months of the year<\/strong>, underscoring the severity of the crisis and the need for a stronger international response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Against this backdrop, the Haitian government is seeking greater international cooperation to restore minimum security conditions that would allow the country to move toward elections and economic recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Haiti has urged the international community to strengthen its support to help restore security, organize elections and revive the country’s economy amid a severe crisis fueled by armed gang violence.
