Lima.- <\/strong>The Government of Peru <\/strong>eliminated this Friday the possibility of making advance reservations to visit the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu<\/strong>, its greatest tourist attraction, upon confirming that the digital sales platform is collapsed due to tickets being set aside that are later not used, which prevents other visitors from purchasing their tickets directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a press conference, the Peruvian Minister of Culture, Alberto Beingolea<\/strong>, announced that the measure will be implemented in ten days, so that the system only allows the purchase of nominal tickets, linked to an identification for each user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beingolea explained that, according to an analysis of nearly 210,000 reservations, a total of 131,626 were subsequently canceled, which represents 62.9%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If you enter now, you won’t find tickets until December. One can reserve several tickets and these remain blocked,” the minister pointed out, noting that this prevents the entire existing tourist demand from reaching Machu Picchu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the time those reservations are blocked, which has led to many foreign visitors experiencing difficulties in finding a ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Today the experience is not good. Many tourists are complaining because they cannot find tickets, and they leave for Machu Picchu with the idea of finding the entrance, but that is not the case, and they have to stay longer than they should,” commented Beingolea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of the Ministry of Culture commented that this measure will continue to respect the capacity limits for Machu Picchu and will not eliminate the one thousand tickets that are put up for physical sale each day in Machu Picchu Pueblo, also known as Aguas Calientes, which has also been criticized by the tourism sector for generating long lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Rogers Valencia, indicated that the arrival of tourists is currently 2.5% below last year and almost 15% compared to 2019, the year prior to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The first step is to improve the ticket sales system, immediately after we will work on the visitation models for a system that is sustainable and allows us to ensure the quality of the tourist visit,”<\/strong> noted Valencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Not all Machu Picchu tourists have a historical or archaeological interest. Some only have a natural interest, such as seeing the Inca wren, a species endemic to Machu Picchu, as well as species of orchids,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
