Volyrumba Cup will celebrate its 11th anniversary with more than 20 teams<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe organization also decided that the 2031 ones will take place in Munich (Germany), at the meeting that the international athletics federation (World Athletics) is holding this Tuesday in Budapest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe were fortunate to have four exceptional bids for 2029 and 2031 and this was not an easy decision for the Council, which continues to fulfill its mission of promoting athletics globally by holding our World Athletics Championships in Asia, Africa, and Europe during their next three editions,\u201d declared World Athletics President, the Briton Sebastian Coe, after the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNairobi and Munich presented two very attractive proposals. They offer very different but equally exciting opportunities for our sport and I am pleased that we can now start working with both cities to host two world-class championships,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
WA’s bet on Africa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Nairobi World Championships will build on World Athletics’ growing track record of successful events held in Africa.
Kampala (Uganda) hosted the World Cross Country Championships in 2017; Nairobi hosted the World U18 Championships that same year and the World U20 Championships in 2021; while Gaborone (Botswana) hosted the World Relays in 2026, the first edition of this event to be held in Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within the framework of this broader evolution, for World Athletics, Nairobi has established itself as “a highly prestigious host city” after presenting a more comprehensive bid than the one it offered for 2025, when Tokyo was chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kenya’s strong connection to athletics is also reflected in the World Athletics fan survey. Approximately 68% of Kenyans surveyed rated their interest in athletics as high, compared to a global average of 39%, making Kenya the market with the highest interest in athletics of all those surveyed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kenya has the highest Net Promoter Score of all markets and athletics is the second most followed sport in the country, only behind football. Kenya ranks fourth in terms of followers on World Athletics’ social media channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Germany will take over<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
After Nairobi, the next World Championships will be in Germany, a country that for World Athletics has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to organize major high-level athletics events and attract a large audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Berlin hosted the Europeans in 2018, while the Munich Olympic Stadium was the main venue for the 2022 multi-sport European Championships, with an attendance of about 267,000 spectators at the athletics events, according to the organizers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Olympiapark is also a symbol of sustainability, and we are certain that this will be a fundamental value in the planning and execution of the World Championships, in line with the best international practices and the gold standard for World Athletics events,\u201d declares Coe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next World Athletics Championships will take place in Beijing from September 10 to 19, 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both Nairobi 2029 and Munich 2031 will also be held in September, in line with the goal of having the global athletics calendar reach its climax at the end of the season with a major world championship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
