LGBTQ+ dating platform Grindr has agreed to pay \u00a326 million, about $35.2 million, to settle a legal dispute brought by thousands of users who alleged that their private information, including in some cases their HIV status, was shared with advertising companies without their consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The settlement, reported by The Guardian, resolves litigation that began in April 2024 and concerns data-handling practices dating to before 2020. British law firm Austen Hays, which represented 12,000 people, said claimants could receive an average of \u00a32,167, or approximately $2,933, if the settlement is distributed equally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the agreement, Grindr will pay $17.6 million before the end of this year and another $17.6 million by the end of March 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the investigation, the information allegedly shared included highly sensitive data such as users\u2019 HIV status, the date of their most recent HIV test, sexual orientation and GPS location. The lawsuit alleged that the sharing of this information violated British data protection laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grindr said the case concerns \u201chistorical data practices prior to 2020,\u201d when the app was controlled by Beijing Kunlun Tech. The company said the settlement does not include findings or an admission of liability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although Grindr disputes the allegations, the company said it recognizes the distress and loss of trust expressed by some British users regarding the period before 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grindr also said it has reviewed its privacy program since 2020, with particular attention to the unique needs of its community. The company maintains that it is and remains a safe space for users and is committed to transparency, user control and responsible data practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Guardian also noted that Grindr changed ownership six years ago after a U.S. national security panel raised concerns about the potential access of the Chinese government to the personal data of American users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
