Australian runner Joanna Wietrzyk, 22, has sparked controversy after winning the professional women’s Hyrox Beijing competition despite suffering an episode of fecal incontinence during the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident occurred on September 12 during the fitness competition in Beijing, China. Images circulating online show Wietrzyk continuing to run and complete exercises including burpees, rowing, sandbag lunges and medicine-ball throws, despite fecal matter being visible on her feet, socks and shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wietrzyk finished first with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 23 seconds. The incident has since triggered debate among runners and members of the international sports community over hygiene, safety and the limits of the “never give up” mentality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The controversy centers not only on the involuntary incident itself, which can occur during high-intensity exercise, but also on Wietrzyk’s decision to continue competing. Unlike a conventional long-distance race, Hyrox athletes compete indoors and repeatedly use the same course and equipment. Other competitors following Wietrzyk could therefore have been exposed to areas and equipment contaminated by bodily waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The debate intensified after Wietrzyk posted a photo of herself receiving an intravenous treatment alongside the messages “Push yourself or go home” and “A win is a win.” The publication was later deleted. Some users praised her determination, while others argued that winning should not take priority over competitors’ right to a clean and safe environment.
Hyrox’s existing rules prohibit athletes from spitting or blowing their noses on the floor, with penalties ranging from a two-minute suspension to disqualification. Littering can also result in a two-minute penalty, while the competition’s code of conduct requires athletes to respect the event environment and avoid behavior that affects other participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the rules did not previously contain a specific provision addressing fecal incontinence or the risk of biological contamination. Organizers acknowledged that this gap prevented officials from intervening promptly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moritz Furste, Hyrox co-founder, later apologized and acknowledged that organizers had made a mistake by failing to respond immediately during the race. Hyrox subsequently introduced a rule allowing the competition coordinator to remove an athlete for medical reasons if blood, vomit, urine or feces pose a health risk to that athlete or others. Such an athlete is recorded as DNF, meaning they did not finish the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hyrox Beijing also said the affected area was sealed and disinfected, the equipment involved was removed, and the entire track surface was replaced after the race, followed by additional deep cleaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident has ultimately prompted Hyrox to establish a clearer boundary between an athlete pushing through personal physical limits and a situation in which bodily waste could create a health or safety risk for other competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
