New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani told Mexican migrants celebrating Independence Day in Brooklyn that they are welcome in the city, referring to the neighborhood of Sunset Park as \u201cPueblaYork,\u201d a nod to the large community of Mexican immigrants from Puebla living in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mamdani delivered the remarks Tuesday, September 15, during the Mexican Independence Day celebrations in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI come before you as the mayor of our city to say that here, in PueblaYork, you are home. And you will always have a home here,\u201d Mamdani said during the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mayor also said that the city\u2019s clinics, schools and shelters would remain open to everyone, regardless of immigration status. His remarks came as Mexican communities across New York gathered for celebrations marking the country\u2019s Independence Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mamdani said that, when he looked at those attending the celebration, he saw a crowd of New Yorkers and expressed his appreciation for the Mexican community\u2019s contributions to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI come to say that we are proud of you. I come to say that we are grateful to you,\u201d Mamdani said before concluding his remarks with a call celebrating the Mexican community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The appearance followed Mamdani\u2019s participation in the Mexican Independence Day Parade in Sunset Park on September 13, where he served as grand marshal. He became the first New York City mayor to participate in the parade, according to multiple reports.
