U.S. President Donald Trump has included the Dominican Republic among 23 countries identified by his administration as major territories for the transit or production of illicit drugs for fiscal year 2027. The list also includes Afghanistan, the Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Burma, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a document submitted to Congress on Tuesday, September 15, the designation follows Section 706 of the Foreign Relations Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2003. The administration said that a country\u2019s inclusion on the list does not mean its government is failing to take action against drug trafficking or that it lacks cooperation with the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The administration explained that the designations are based on a definition established under U.S. law and reflect geographic, commercial and economic factors that may facilitate the transit or production of drugs or chemical precursors. The Dominican Republic was not included among the countries Washington determined had failed to make substantial efforts over the past 12 months to meet their drug-control obligations.
