The discovery began in 2016, when Bolivian biologist Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz encountered a spotted kitten that had been rescued by a man who believed it was a domestic cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genomic analysis conducted by Nogales-Ascarrunz, geneticists Eduardo Eizirik and Jonas Lescroart found that the animal diverged from other tiger cat species about 1.4 million years ago. The species was named \u201ctilcayo,\u201d the name used for the animal by local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discovery is considered the first new wild cat species identified in more than a century, since the pampas cat was described in 1923.
