International Desk.- <\/strong>The three U.S. media outlets to which President Donald Trump denied access to the White House<\/a> \u2014CNN, MS NOW, and Politico<\/strong>\u2014 have filed a lawsuit against the president. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit has been filed before a federal judge at the U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. and could lead to hearings and legal arguments by the administration as early as this week, the affected media outlets reported in a joint statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Amendment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis morning (Monday), we notified the government that we filed a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,\u201d the media outlets indicate.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWithout prior notice or any procedure, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it opposed our reporting,\u201d the note states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document adds that \u201cif not challenged, this measure threatens freedom of the press and the public’s right to independent journalism, free from government interference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump announced last Friday that he was banning access to the White House for the three media outlets with immediate effect, accusing them of spreading “fake news,” and threatened to extend the measure to other media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The media should not be allowed to constantly write and broadcast fiction and lies when covering the President of the United States,” Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The announcement marked a new escalation in the president’s offensive against the press, after he restricted the Associated Press (AP) agency’s access to some events at the White House at the beginning of his term for refusing to use the name “Gulf of America” to refer to the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effective veto<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reporters from the CNN, MS NOW networks and the Politico newspaper cannot access their workspaces inside the White House. CNN and MS NOW are also prohibited from using their television equipment and cameras on the residence’s grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, MS NOW reporter Akayla Gardner, CNN reporter Betsy Klein, and Politico reporter Cheyenne Haslett attempted to enter the White House grounds to cover news, but were denied access and had their press credentials confiscated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has historically maintained a tense relationship with the press, whom he accuses of lying recurrently, in addition to having publicly insulted reporters and filed multi-million dollar lawsuits against media outlets, which press freedom advocacy organizations view as an attempt at censorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The veto jeopardizes Trump’s coverage at the UN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The veto now imposed on these three media outlets puts at risk the audiovisual coverage of Trump’s trip to New York to participate this week in the UN General Assembly,<\/strong> since CNN\u2014one of the affected networks\u2014was in charge of following the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, major U.S. television networks have maintained a rotating system, known in English as a ‘pool,’ through which one of them accompanies the president on trips and distributes the footage to the rest of the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the ban on CNN, the president will travel in an unprecedented manner without a television crew integrated into the \u2018pool\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump’s address to the General Assembly<\/strong>, scheduled for Tuesday, will be distributed by the United Nations production team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
