A phase 2 clinical trial suggests that daily vitamin C supplementation may benefit people with certain pre-cancerous blood disorders and early-stage blood cancers. The randomized, placebo-controlled EVITA trial involved 109 people with clonal cytopenia of undetermined significance (CCUS) or lower-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), conditions that can progress to acute myeloid leukemia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 1,000 milligrams of oral vitamin C per day or a placebo for 12 months. More than half of the participants had vitamin C deficiency at the beginning of the study, and levels returned to normal among those who received the supplement. Researchers also observed changes in inflammatory markers known as cytokines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The study did not find a significant difference between the vitamin C and placebo groups in the rate at which abnormal blood cell clones grew, an indicator used to assess progression toward leukemia. However, an exploratory analysis found significantly higher overall survival among participants who received vitamin C after approximately three years of follow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The researchers stressed that the findings are preliminary and need to be confirmed in a larger phase 3 trial. They said it is too early to make definitive recommendations about vitamin C supplementation based on these results.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
