In its weekly \u201cAsk the Consul\u201d column, the embassy noted that some hospitals in the Dominican Republic may require patients to pay before receiving treatment or being discharged. It also explained that many private U.S. insurers operate on a reimbursement basis abroad, meaning travelers may have to pay medical expenses upfront and seek reimbursement after returning to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The embassy further warned that medical evacuation can cost more than $10,000 and is often not covered by standard U.S. insurance.
