Chile<\/strong>.- The Senate of Chile issued a statement this Monday in which they assure that they will reinforce the defense of the Strait of Magellan, following the controversy with Argentina over crossed statements regarding its sovereignty, within the framework of the anniversary of the possession of the southern zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document points out that, in the discussion of the 2027 National Budget, they will reflect the need to “ensure the maintenance, renewal, and strengthening of the strategic capabilities necessary for the surveillance and protection of Chile’s sovereign spaces, in accordance with current treaties.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The congressmen, in a cross-party delegation, traveled to Punta Arenas, in the south of the country, and participated in the ceremony for the 183rd anniversary of the taking possession of the Strait of Magellan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, they responded to the statements of Argentine authorities who, since last August, had expressed ambiguity regarding Chile’s exclusive sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Strait of Magellan is part of the national territory and is under the control and exclusive sovereignty of Chile, within the limits established by current treaties. Its government, administration, and protection correspond to the State of Chile, with full respect for its international obligations,” the text states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by the President of the Senate, Paulina N\u00fa\u00f1ez, of the center-right National Renewal party, the senators signed a declaration that makes mention of the 1881 Boundary Treaty and the 1984 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Chile and Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This latest treaty, signed after the 1978 bilateral crisis and the Vatican’s mediation, reaffirmed the territorial framework and sought to establish guarantees to avoid new controversies between both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senators emphasized that the special regime is preserved by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We value the relationship with the Argentine Republic and the peace built between both nations. We reaffirm our will to strengthen cooperation and good neighborliness based on reciprocal respect, legal certainty, and strict compliance with treaties,” they expressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Senate stated in its declaration that the commemoration “demands assuming a sustained commitment to the future of Magallanes and the southern zone. Regional development, connectivity, and the well-being of its inhabitants must occupy a permanent place in national decisions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The validity of the controversial Argentine presidential decree No. 457, issued in 2021 during the Alberto Fern\u00e1ndez administration, which establishes the National Defense Policy Directive, worries parliamentarians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One of the shared spaces that is fundamental to continue strengthening is that of joint exploration, study, and control over the Strait of Magellan and the Sea of Hoces (Drake Passage), strategic spaces both for their role as natural navigable routes between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean and for constituting privileged points of access to the Antarctic continent,” the text says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
