Miami (USA).- <\/strong>Activists and politicians in Doral, the Florida city with the highest proportion of Venezuelans in the United States, criticized this Tuesday’s meeting between President Donald Trump<\/strong> and the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodr\u00edguez, while this community has become a “focus” of deportations with the help of local police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community leaders protested in front of Doral City Hall, a city in the Miami metropolitan area nicknamed ‘Doralzuela’, to demand that the mayor, Christi Fraga, and the council members terminate the ‘287(g)’ agreement, which authorizes local police to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They could have defended their community, they could have said no (to signing the cooperation agreement with ICE), but they decided not to. And why? Because they support President Trump,” stated Adelys Ferro, executive director of the Venezuelan American Caucus (VAC), which represents Venezuelans in the United States.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“The same President Trump who tonight at 7:00 p.m. is meeting with the representative of the illegitimate dictatorship in Venezuela, Delcy Rodr\u00edguez, at a hotel in New York to finish giving her the legitimacy that no Venezuelan has given her,” the activist added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Ghost town’<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ferro warned that the fear of deportations has turned Doral into a “ghost town,” with 81,000 inhabitants, of whom more than 85% are Hispanic and half of the total are Venezuelans, who celebrated in the streets last January the capture of the then-ruler of Venezuela, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, by the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festive atmosphere of that time contrasts with the current fear of Venezuelans, from whom the Trump Administration has removed protections such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and the humanitarian ‘parole’ granted by former President Joe Biden (2021-2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added to this is the fact that Doral signed a ‘287(g) agreement’ in January, through which local police cooperate with ICE, which is why residents constantly report on their social media the presence of patrols and the arrest of immigrants, including those who have work permits and asylum applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A green light to turn local government into an arm of the federal deportation machinery and since then everything has gotten worse. Raids, fear, terror, cruelty. Doral is a ghost town. Families afraid to send their children to school, to go to work, to step out their front door,” said Ferro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florida, anti-immigrant leader<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The phenomenon occurs after the record of nearly 51,000 immigration arrests in the United States<\/strong> in August, the highest figure of Trump’s second term, while Florida Governor, Republican Ron DeSantis, boasts that his state leads in anti-immigrant measures, such as the ‘287(g)’ agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mayor of Doral and Venezuelan-American councilman Rafael Pineyro, Republicans who supported Trump, have argued that state laws force them to cooperate with ICE, but the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) pointed out that two-thirds of the municipalities in Miami-Dade County have not done so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They come and shed crocodile tears, now that the political winds have turned against them, and they lie to you, they do interviews and say: ‘we were forced to do this’. No, the state law is clear, the city of Doral was not forced to do this,” maintained Thomas Kennedy, a consultant for FLIC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Javier Fern\u00e1ndez, mayor of South Miami, indicated that he did not sign the agreement to cooperate with ICE, so Doral could do the same without fear of retaliation from the DeSantis administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This city is a community, Miami-Dade, truly, that has been driven by the work and effort of immigrants, we are all migrants, I am the son of exiles, I think we have done a tremendous injustice to the legacy of our parents and our grandparents by contributing to this policy of President Trump,” he expressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
