Havana.- <\/strong>Some 17 migrants from Haiti<\/strong> are being assisted by local authorities and the Cuban Red Cross after their vessel<\/strong> deviated from its route to the U.S. and landed in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba due to \u201chydrometeorological conditions,\u201d official media on the island reported this Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to local press reports, the group consisting of 14 men, one woman, one girl, and one boy<\/strong>, arrived at Siboney beach after 22:00 local time this Monday (02:00 GMT) after being \u201cadrift for seven days prior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Cross in the eastern Cuban province reported that, in order to assist the migrants, a “security apparatus” was deployed along the coast with the objective of “guaranteeing the safety and physical integrity” of these individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All members of the group \u201cwere evaluated by paramedic and medical personnel, who did not detect any symptoms or signs that could pose a risk to public health,\u201d they pointed out.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, several vessels with migrants from Haiti have arrived on the Cuban coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, six Haitian fishermen were rescued off the southern coast of Santiago de Cuba, and in May 2022, a vessel with 842 migrants from the nearby Caribbean nation ended up on the shores of Villa Clara (center) while seeking to reach the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2001 to 2021, a total of 76 vessels carrying more than 4,000 Haitian immigrants arrived in the Cuban province of Guantanamo (eastern tip) alone, according to official data.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
