Casey Revkin, a California mother who has spent years helping immigrant children, is sending up to $10,000 a week to families with children detained at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas. Through her organization, Each Step Home, she provides money that families can use to buy basic items inside the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Revkin began helping immigrant families during Donald Trump\u2019s first administration. In 2018, after learning about children being separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border, she helped families complete paperwork, organize documents and coordinate transportation for appointments related to family reunification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her focus shifted after she learned about children and families being held at Dilley. She began depositing money into detainees\u2019 accounts so they could purchase water, food, toiletries, school supplies and other necessities. Her first deposit was $50 for a family with a two-month-old baby who had a respiratory infection. She now says she spends about $10,000 a week and estimates the assistance reaches about 80% of those detained at Dilley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The money comes from donations and allows families to purchase items including bottled water, cereal, soup, shampoo, conditioner, snacks, notebooks and art supplies. An immigration attorney who works at the facility described Revkin as a \u201cfairy godmother\u201d because of the assistance she provides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
