New York .- The Prime Minister of Nepal, Balendra Shah, warned the international community this Thursday that the devastating flood that buried a Himalayan valley in August constitutes an urgent signal regarding the consequences of the climate crisis and called on world leaders to adopt concrete measures to address it.

During his address to the United Nations General Assembly, Shah stated that the disaster that occurred in the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli area should not be viewed solely as a national tragedy, but as a warning about the effects that climate change is causing, especially in the most vulnerable countries.

“I come from Nepal, a distant country in the Himalayas, bringing a close warning for humanity,” stated the leader, who questioned whether the international community has truly listened to the signs that, as he said, have been warned about for years by scientists and affected communities.

Shah maintained that Nepal has directly experienced the consequences of global warming, despite its minimal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

The Prime Minister noted that Nepal barely accounts for 0.1% of global emissions, yet it faces the melting of its glaciers, floods, and other phenomena that threaten entire communities.

“We did not create this crisis, yet we are paying a colossal price for it,” stated Shah from the United Nations podium.

The Nepalese leader highlighted that the effects of the climate crisis are not limited to a country’s borders and warned about the impact that phenomena such as glacier melting and flooding have on populations living in high-risk areas.

“Climate change does not recognize borders. Glaciers and floods do not travel with a visa stamped in their passports,” he/she expressed.

The magnitude of the disaster has left Nepal facing a complex recovery phase. According to the data presented by the leader, more than 6,000 people remain missing and at least 1,400 have been confirmed dead as a result of the floods.

Nepal’s Needs

Shah explained that Nepal will need about 10% of its gross domestic product to address recovery efforts after the catastrophe, an economic burden that, he argued, demonstrates the vulnerability of the least developed countries to the effects of climate change.

The president also questioned the response of governments and considered that the warnings from scientists and affected communities have not been translated into concrete actions quickly enough.

“In Nepal, we heard the warning. Our communities heard it. Scientists around the world heard it and echoed it with evidence. But we, the world’s political leaders, have been negligent in failing to translate those warnings into action,” he stated.

As part of its proposals, Nepal suggested the creation of a cooperation mechanism with India and China to share satellite information, monitor glacial lakes, and coordinate rapid responses to potential emergencies.

The initiative seeks to strengthen prevention and improve information exchange between countries that share one of the most important mountainous regions on the planet.

Shah also called for greater international commitment to countries facing the greatest impacts of the climate crisis despite having contributed little to its origin.

“Climate justice cannot just be a beautiful phrase in a United Nations document,” stated the Prime Minister of Nepal, who urged turning international commitments into concrete measures to protect the most exposed populations.

Shah’s speech once again places Nepal at the center of the international debate on climate change and seeks to draw attention to the need to strengthen prevention, regional cooperation, and response mechanisms for disasters linked to global warming.
