At the same time, older adults experienced a downward trend in stroke incidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study examined hospitalized stroke cases across six periods between 1993 and 2020 in five counties in the Cincinnati metropolitan area and northern Kentucky. Researchers identified 2,076 first-time strokes among adults ages 20 to 54.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The increase was driven primarily by ischemic strokes, which occur when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked. Their incidence nearly doubled, rising from 23.8 cases per 100,000 people annually in 1993-1994 to 47.3 in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers also found that several risk factors became more common among younger adults who experienced strokes, including high blood pressure, diabetes, atrial fibrillation and substance use. However, the authors noted that they did not have comparable data from people who had not suffered a stroke, so the study cannot establish that these changes directly caused the increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, 30-day mortality after stroke among younger adults declined slightly, from 11.7% in 1993-1994 to 9.4% in 2020. Researchers said the improvement in survival also means more young adults may be living for years with disabilities and other consequences from stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authors emphasized the importance of identifying and managing cardiovascular risk factors earlier in life and said further research is needed to determine what is driving the trend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The incidence of stroke among adults ages 20 to 54 nearly doubled over less than three decades in parts of the United States, according to a new study published in the medical journal Neurology.
