New York City is preparing for a weekend of rain, strong winds and possible coastal flooding as a nor\u2019easter moves offshore. Authorities are monitoring the system, with the heaviest rainfall expected east of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the New York City Emergency Management Department are closely tracking the storm, which is expected to intensify Friday night and continue affecting the area through Sunday. Residents, particularly those living near the coast, have been urged to take precautions before winds strengthen and high tides create additional risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph between Friday night and Saturday morning. Rain is expected from Friday afternoon through Sunday, with estimated totals of 1 to 1.5 inches. Although the storm\u2019s center will remain offshore, conditions could still cause problems in low-lying and exposed areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These NYC areas could face flooding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The greatest concern is associated with high tides. NYC Emergency Management identified the eastern shore of Staten Island, the Rockaways and areas around Jamaica Bay as particularly vulnerable to flooding Friday night and Saturday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Notify NYC has also issued a coastal flood alert for southern Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. The city warned that flooding of up to one foot above ground level could affect streets and properties near the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Authorities are also monitoring conditions at beaches, where an elevated risk of rip currents could continue through at least Saturday. Waves could cause erosion, although NYC Emergency Management expects this to be more likely on Long Island than at city beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What should New Yorkers do before the storm?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Residents are advised to secure or bring indoors any objects that could be blown around by strong winds, including outdoor furniture, grills, decorations, garbage containers and items on balconies, patios or rooftops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Drivers who normally park in coastal areas vulnerable to flooding should move their vehicles to higher ground before high tides. Residents are also encouraged to clear leaves and debris from drains and gutters to help water flow and reduce flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People living in basements or ground-floor apartments in vulnerable areas should identify more than one exit route and keep those paths clear.
