Caracas,.-<\/strong> The Government of Venezuela<\/strong> reiterated this Friday that it will not abide by any decision emanating from the International Court of Justice (ICJ)<\/a> regarding the territorial dispute it maintains with Guyana over the Esequibo region, after the Guyanese Government urged Caracas to comply with the upcoming ruling of the international tribunal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Venezuelan Foreign Minister, F\u00e9lix Plasencia<\/strong>, reaffirmed Venezuela<\/strong>‘s historical position regarding the judicial process and pointed out that the country does not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICJ to settle the territorial controversy over the so-called Guayana Esequiba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVenezuela ratifies its historic position of non-recognition of the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice to settle the territorial controversy over the Guayana Esequiba,\u201d <\/strong>stated Plasencia when responding to the approach made by Guyana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official recalled that the position of the Government of Venezuela<\/strong> is that the dispute must be resolved through direct negotiation between both countries, without the intervention of external organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnly bilateral negotiation will be the legitimate and legal space to resolve this historical controversy,\u201d maintained the Venezuelan foreign minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement came one day after the President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali<\/strong>, referred to the dispute during his speech before the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ali urged Venezuela<\/strong> to comply with the upcoming ruling of the ICJ, a court that Caracas has questioned and whose jurisdiction it does not recognize for this case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Guyanese leader also expressed his expectation that the controversy could give way to a new stage in relations between both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe look forward to a new era of neighborly relations in the interest of our peoples, the development of our countries, and the stability and prosperity of our region,\u201d<\/strong> stated Ali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement by the President of Guyana came after Venezuela<\/strong> defended, also before the United Nations, what it considers its historical rights over the territory of Essequibo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong> had defended Caracas’ position on the region a day earlier and maintained that the most lasting agreements are those reached through bilateral negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The territorial dispute involves a region of approximately 160,000 square kilometers<\/strong>, considered strategic due to its natural resources, including minerals and oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guyana maintains that the proceedings before the ICJ constitute the legitimate path to resolve the territorial dispute, while Venezuela<\/strong> maintains that the controversy must be settled through direct dialogue between the parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The positions of both countries remain at odds regarding the role that the international court should play in resolving the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government of Venezuela<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last May, the Government of Venezuela<\/strong> had already indicated that the dispute over the Essequibo should be concluded through direct negotiation with Guyana and without the participation of third parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This position coincided with the development of hearings related to the case before the ICJ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The territorial conflict has its origins in the 1899 Paris Arbitral Award<\/strong>, through which sovereignty over the territory was established in favor of the then British Guiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guyana currently administers the disputed territory and maintains that the 1899 award definitively established the border between both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Venezuela<\/strong> declared that ruling null and void in 1962<\/strong>, alleging that the arbitration process was marked by irregularities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, Caracas has maintained its claim over the Essequibo and has defended different negotiation mechanisms to address the dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Venezuelan government considers that the 1966 Geneva Agreement<\/strong> constitutes the framework for seeking a negotiated solution to the controversy, while Guyana supports the process taking place before the International Court of Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dispute continues to be one of the main foreign policy issues for both countries and has generated diplomatic exchanges in various international settings, including the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, the Government of Venezuela<\/strong> maintains its rejection of the ICJ’s jurisdiction in this case, while Guyana insists that both parties must respect the decision adopted by the international court regarding the territorial dispute.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
