Washington.-<\/strong> The 32 active member states of the OAS<\/strong> requested this Friday that the United Nations Security Council renew the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haiti and demanded the necessary resources from the international community to complete its deployment and ensure its sustained operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a joint statement, the countries expressed their support for the mission and called for the provision of personnel, funding, equipment, and logistical support so that it can fulfill the functions envisioned in Haitian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The member States<\/a> of the OAS<\/strong> further reaffirmed their respect for the sovereignty and independence of Haiti and maintained that solutions to the crisis must be led by the Haitians themselves, in coordination with their international partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OAS<\/strong> Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, endorsed the statement and noted that the renewal of the force’s mandate must be accompanied by sufficient resources to ensure it can carry out its operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ramdin, the GSF plays a role in efforts to assist Haitian authorities in regaining territorial control, restoring access to critical infrastructure, and improving public security conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the priorities raised by the countries is support for the Haitian National Police and the country’s Armed Forces, as well as the recovery of areas that remain under the control of armed groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OAS<\/strong> declaration also identifies as objectives ensuring access to the airport and the port, reopening main transport routes, and protecting facilities considered strategic for the functioning of the State and economic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governments also called for greater efforts to tackle the arms trafficking that fuels violence in Haiti, as well as the financial and supply networks that allow gangs to operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For OAS<\/strong> member states, the strengthening of security conditions is also related to the preparation of future elections in Haiti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that sense, the declaration raises the need to advance in processes such as civil identification, voter registration, and the preparation of the logistics necessary to organize the elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OAS<\/strong> highlighted that coordination between Haitian institutions and international organizations will be necessary to advance in the different areas related to security, governance, and electoral organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The call includes greater coordination between Haiti, the OAS<\/strong>, the United Nations, the Caribbean Community (Caricom), and other international partners involved in efforts to address the crisis the country is going through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hemispheric organization considers that international support must be translated into concrete resources so that the force can complete its deployment and maintain its operations in a sustained manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The position expressed by the OAS<\/strong> comes in a context marked by international concern over the security situation in Haiti and the difficulties faced by the authorities in guaranteeing control of different areas of the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Member States insisted that any international response must respect Haitian sovereignty and contribute to strengthening national institutions, particularly the bodies responsible for security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OAS<\/strong> also raised the importance of security efforts being accompanied by measures that allow for the recovery of essential services and facilitate the mobility of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The call to the UN Security Council seeks for the international community to maintain its support for the mission and guarantee the human, financial, and material resources necessary for its operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the renewal of the mandate and the strengthening of international cooperation, countries hope to contribute to improving the conditions that will allow Haitian authorities to recover spaces controlled by gangs and advance in the recovery of services and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OAS<\/strong> finally reiterated its willingness to continue working with Haiti, the United Nations, Caricom, and other international actors to support efforts aimed at improving security, strengthening institutions, and creating conditions to advance toward an electoral process in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
