Santo Domingo.\u2013<\/strong> The director of the Pedro Henr\u00edquez Ure\u00f1a National Library, Rafael Peralta Romero<\/strong>, asserted that Dominicans maintain an important reading habit, although he acknowledged that new technologies have transformed the way people access books, newspapers, and other content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the framework of the 2026 International Book Fair<\/strong>, the writer and academic defended reading in both traditional and digital formats and maintained that the fact that a large part of content is currently consumed through electronic devices does not necessarily mean that people have stopped reading. \u201cDominicans read and they read a lot<\/strong>,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The writer pointed out that newspapers currently have digital versions and that many people have shifted their reading habits to phones, tablets, and other devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he expressed concern for students who rely exclusively on their cell phones during their academic training process, especially in majors that require delving into scientific and specialized content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUniversity students have always been trained with books, real books,\u201d he\/she expressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peralta Romero considered that cell phones facilitate access to a large amount of information, but warned that not all available content has the necessary depth for academic training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWithout a book, there is no education. Because the cell phone provides information, really, but scientific information is more difficult,\u201d he maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Call to encourage reading from childhood<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The academic placed special emphasis on the need to develop the habit of reading from the earliest years of life and highlighted the role played by children’s literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his view, a child who maintains contact with literary works can develop a better educational foundation, expand their command of the language, and stimulate their imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe child who reads literary works will grow up with reading habits and will be a student with a better foundation, will know the language better, will develop their imagination better, and will have a disposition for reading and for study,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peralta Romero recommended that parents and grandparents accompany children during reading, avoiding presenting it as an obligation and turning it into a shared activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also urged families to consider books as gifts for children and adolescents due to the long-term benefits they can provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGive books to your children and to the teenagers as well, and they will pick up the habit that we need,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
