Santo Domingo.\u2013<\/strong> The Dominican Republic experienced a day marked by seismic<\/a> activity this Sunday, September 27, 2026<\/strong>, with several reports of tremors that were felt in different parts of the country and caused concern among citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the day, information circulated regarding three seismic records<\/strong>, two during the early morning hours and another of greater magnitude in the afternoon. However, the National Seismological Center (CNS) of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD)<\/strong> subsequently corrected the initial data and established that the two morning reports corresponded to the same seismic event<\/strong>, whose location and magnitude were revised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First report located the earthquake in Bohech\u00edo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first report released during the morning indicated that a movement of magnitude 4.1<\/strong> had occurred at approximately 6:06 a.m.<\/strong>, with a location near Bohech\u00edo, San Juan province<\/strong>, and an initially estimated depth of 10 kilometers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information began to spread rapidly during the early hours of Sunday, as citizens from different areas reported having felt the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, earthquake parameters obtained immediately after an event occurs are preliminary and may change as specialists incorporate data from additional seismic stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seismology relocates the event in San Antonio de Guerra<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After reviewing the signals recorded by the national network, the National Seismological Center corrected the initial information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency established the event at magnitude 4.3<\/strong> and located its epicenter approximately 2.6 kilometers north-northwest of San Antonio de Guerra<\/strong>, in the Santo Domingo province, with a depth of 95.7 kilometers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this way, the movement that had initially been located near Bohech\u00edo and the one subsequently reported near San Antonio de Guerra should not be counted as two independent earthquakes<\/strong>, but rather as the same event whose parameters were modified after the technical review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earthquake was felt in different sectors of Greater Santo Domingo and other locations<\/strong>, with no reports of casualties or significant material damage in the reports consulted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strong tremor felt again during the afternoon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Seismic activity drew attention again hours later, when around 5:49 in the afternoon<\/strong> a new and stronger movement was recorded in the Eastern region of the Dominican Republic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first automatic detection systems estimated a preliminary magnitude of 5.5<\/strong>, while geologist Osiris de Le\u00f3n<\/strong> reported through his X account that the preliminary epicenter was located in the northern area of La Romana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Le\u00f3n’s post was accompanied by a map that placed the movement in Dominican territory, north of the city of La Romana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequent estimates began to place the magnitude around 5.0<\/strong>, so the initial value of 5.5 should be handled as preliminary and subject to revision<\/strong> by specialized agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three reports, but not necessarily three earthquakes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The succession of reports caused confusion this Sunday, because initially three records<\/strong> could be counted: the 4.1 located in Bohech\u00edo, the 4.3 near San Antonio de Guerra, and the movement of up to 5.5 reported during the afternoon in the Eastern region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the review carried out by Seismology indicates that the first two corresponded to the same event<\/strong>, which was relocated and recalculated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, with the verified information available, two main events can be distinguished during the day: the 4.3 magnitude earthquake recorded during the morning and the stronger movement that occurred during the afternoon in the East, whose final magnitude was pending consolidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference between initial reports and subsequent data is not unusual. Seismological systems perform automatic calculations immediately after detecting an earthquake, and subsequently, specialists review additional information to refine the magnitude, depth, and location of the epicenter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dominican Republic remains under seismic surveillance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Dominican Republic is located in an area of significant tectonic activity in the Caribbean, mainly due to its proximity to the boundary between the North American and Caribbean<\/strong> tectonic plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Seismological Center maintains continuous monitoring of the movements that occur in the Dominican territory and surrounding maritime zones through its network of stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
