{"id":524258,"date":"2026-09-28T10:27:38","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T14:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.com\/en\/?p=524258"},"modified":"2026-09-28T10:27:43","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T14:27:43","slug":"storm-uncovers-possible-remains-of-1884-shipwreck-on-nantucket-massachusetts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.com\/en\/history\/storm-uncovers-possible-remains-of-1884-shipwreck-on-nantucket-massachusetts\/","title":{"rendered":"Storm uncovers possible remains of 1884 shipwreck on Nantucket, Massachusetts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A powerful storm that battered the northeastern United States has exposed a piece of wood on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, that likely belonged to the <em>Warren Sawyer<\/em>, a three-masted ship that sank in December 1884.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fragment was discovered Saturday along the island\u2019s southern coast, where significant erosion caused by the storm exposed wooden beams held together with iron fittings, rusty nails and remnants of seaweed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>Warren Sawyer<\/em> was traveling from New Orleans to Boston carrying cotton and scrap iron when it was blown off course by strong winds and ran aground near Miacomet Beach on December 22, 1884.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of the people aboard survived the shipwreck. According to historical accounts, rescuers first threw a rope to the vessel and later established a rescue system that allowed the entire crew to reach shore safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other wreckage was discovered in the same area in 2022 and 2023. Researchers believe the newly exposed remains probably belong to the <em>Warren Sawyer<\/em> after examining historical documents, archives, photographs and archaeological evidence, although the identification could not initially be confirmed definitively because of discrepancies between the recovered fittings and records of the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site is located in an area where more than 700 vessel accidents were recorded during the 19th century, according to the Nantucket Shipwreck &amp; Lifesaving Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A powerful storm that battered the northeastern United States has exposed a piece of wood on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, that likely belonged to the Warren Sawyer, a three-masted ship that sank in December 1884.
