Bangkok.\u2013<\/strong> A bombing in Burma (Myanmar)<\/strong> attributed to the military government left a preliminary toll of at least 33 civilians dead and 36 injured this Monday in Rakhine State, in the west of the country and bordering Bangladesh, according to the Arakan Army guerrilla group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attack took place in the city of Kyauktaw, where an estimated 200,000 people live, in the vicinity of a busy market, according to a brief statement released by the Arakan Army via Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is possible that the number of fatalities will increase,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> warned the organization, which did not offer further details regarding the deceased, the injured, or the extent of the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burma Bombing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Arakan Army described the incident as one of the deadliest attacks recorded in that region, which has been the scene of numerous airstrikes since the 2021 military coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That year, a group of generals led by Min Aung Hlaing seized power and ended a decade of democratic transition. Since then, the conflict has intensified and thousands of young people have joined armed groups fighting the Army for control of different territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arakan Army has made advances in Rakhine, including the capture, in 2024, of the Thandwe civil airport, located about 340 kilometers northeast of Yangon, the country’s largest city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attacks in Rakhine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This Monday’s bombing in Burma<\/strong> comes after other reported airstrikes in Rakhine. In December 2025, a hospital was hit in an attack that left 33 dead and sparked condemnation from non-governmental organizations against the military government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February of this year, another airstrike by a fighter jet on a market in Rakhine left 17 dead, including several children, according to reports from the Arakan Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
