Puerto Rico.\u2013<\/strong> A shipwreck near Puerto Rico<\/strong> has left a provisional toll of two dead and 40 survivors rescued near Mona Island, after an improvised vessel with about 60 people on board capsized. Authorities<\/a> continued the search for possible missing persons this Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shipwreck occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, about 10 miles off the coast of Mona Island, as officially reported by the United States Coast Guard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Survivors reported that, before the shipwreck, a fight broke out on board in which several people were seriously injured with a machete<\/strong>. Some occupants jumped into the water and tried to swim to Mona Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Coast Guard, none of the people were wearing life jackets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puerto Rico authorities deploy operation <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The emergency came to light around noon on Monday, when the crew of the vessel Tripiti<\/em> informed the Coast Guard Sector San Juan that they had rescued four people from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following that alert, the authorities deployed a large-scale operation that allowed for the rescue of at least 40 people and the recovery of two bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participating in the efforts are the cutter Joseph Doyle<\/em>, <\/strong>Coast Guard aircraft from Borinquen and Miami, the Puerto Rico Police, Air and Marine Operations units of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Dominican Republic Air Force, and personnel from the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The search remained active at the time of the last statement, so there could still be people missing at sea. The authorities did not specify the nationality of those traveling on the vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
