Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee\u2019s death row, survived an attempted execution on Wednesday after receiving two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital. Witnesses and her attorneys said she remained alive and was audibly snoring more than 40 minutes after the second injection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pike was taken by ambulance to an off-site medical facility after the execution attempt. Her current condition has not been publicly disclosed, and her attorneys said they had not been informed of her medical status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her attorneys later raised concerns about possible difficulties accessing her veins, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital and the lack of emergency medical care available during the procedure. The Tennessee Department of Correction said officials followed the state\u2019s established execution protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the failed execution, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee suspended the remaining scheduled executions for the year and ordered an independent review to determine what happened. The decision also affects an execution that had been scheduled for December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pike had been scheduled to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. She was sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom she killed when she was 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident comes months after Tennessee also halted the execution of Tony Carruthers after officials were unable to establish an intravenous line.
