Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Public Health urged the population to take preventive measures in light of the high temperatures being recorded in the country, with the aim of reducing the risks associated with extreme heat, especially among the most vulnerable groups.

The institution recommended paying special attention to children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses, as they are at a higher risk of suffering complications from prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

Among the main preventive measures are staying well hydrated throughout the day, avoiding sun exposure between 11:00 in the morning and 3:00 in the afternoon, staying in cool or ventilated places, and wearing light-colored, lightweight clothing, as well as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

The Ministry explained that heat stroke constitutes a medical emergency that occurs when the body loses the ability to regulate its temperature. Among the warning symptoms, it mentioned high fever, hot and dry skin, dizziness, headache, confusion, nausea, muscle cramps, and loss of consciousness.

In the presence of these signs, authorities advise moving the person to a cool place, loosening their clothing, applying damp cloths to reduce body temperature, offering water if they are conscious, and seeking medical attention immediately. Likewise, they recommended avoiding the consumption of alcohol, energy drinks, and caffeinated beverages, as these promote dehydration.

Public Health also suggested maintaining a light diet, rich in fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, melon, pineapple, cucumber, and lettuce, in addition to reinforcing personal hygiene measures to prevent conditions related to high temperatures.
