Haitian citizen dies in Migration custody due to cardiorespiratory arrest

SANTO DOMINGO. – A Haitian citizen in an irregular migratory condition, detained in La Vega by units of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM), died this Tuesday after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest at the Haina Detention Center, where she had been transferred for processing purposes. The woman, identified as Gedilia Lonzandieu, 36 years old, stated that she felt unwell upon arrival at the center and was accompanied by her partner to the medical dispensary, where she received evaluation and guidance. Subsequently, she was offered food and water in the dining room.

Minutes later, she presented with anxiety, paleness, sweating, and signs of dehydration. She was immediately attended to by a medical team composed of three doctors and a nurse, who initiated stabilization maneuvers and prepared her transfer to the Juan Pablo Pina hospital in San Cristóbal. However, she died while being taken to the ambulance. According to the report from the attending physician, the preliminary diagnosis was cardiorespiratory arrest of undetermined origin. The Regional Sub-Directorate of Investigations of the National Police in Haina, represented by Lieutenant Miguel A. Contreras Osoria, went to the scene and confirmed the death. The body was removed with the authorization of the prosecutor of San Cristóbal, Patricia Durán, and the forensic medical examiner Cándida Correa Mieses, from the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF), for the corresponding legal purposes. The General Directorate of Migration expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated its willingness to collaborate with the authorities in all investigations related to the case.
