Scientists at Cuba’s Center for Molecular Immunology have developed therapeutic candidate 2C12, a drug with characteristics similar to pembrolizumab, an internationally used treatment that stimulates the immune system to target tumor cells, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said.
The development comes as Cuba faces difficulties obtaining medical supplies, medicines and raw materials for its biopharmaceutical industry. Cuban authorities are presenting 2C12 as part of efforts to strengthen domestic drug production, particularly in the field of cancer treatment.
The announcement adds to other Cuban projects focused on cancer therapies, including cooperation programs with Russia to develop medicines and new cancer vaccines.
