Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has signed a law removing the state’s previous 24-week abortion limit, meaning abortion care can now be provided after approximately six months of pregnancy, depending on the physician’s professional judgment.
The law gives doctors greater discretion when providing abortion care later in pregnancy, replacing previous restrictions that applied after 24 weeks.
The measure has sparked strong debate, with pro-life groups and Catholic leaders condemning the expansion, while supporters argue that decisions in complicated pregnancies should remain between patients and their doctors.
