Jairo González sentenced to 8 years in prison for cryptocurrency scam

Santo Domingo.– The Third Collegiate Tribunal of the National District sentenced this Monday Jairo González to eight years in prison after being found guilty of swindling several people through cryptocurrency operations. The defendant must also pay 300 minimum wages. The Public Ministry had requested for Jairo Joel González Durán, the main accused, 20 years in prison, the payment of 400 minimum wages, an additional fine, permanent disqualification from exercising functions related to the financial system, and the seizure of assets acquired with illicit funds.

The court also sentenced Kelmin Santos Rodríguez to 5 years of suspended imprisonment under rules and to the payment of a fine of 100 minimum wages in the public sector. González Durán will also have to pay different amounts to the victims. Regarding the defendants Moisés González, Leandro González, and William Martínez, the court issued an acquittal. According to the accusation, the defendants made a public offering of securities and defrauded for $15,866,184.18, 34,215,561 pesos, as well as 3,301,857.18 of cryptocurrencies called Tether US Dollar, USDT, to the detriment of more than 400 victims.
