Two collaborators of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) were arrested in flagrante delicto after being caught transporting 22 Haitian citizens in an irregular migratory status aboard official vehicles of the institution, in a case that has uncovered an alleged illicit migrant smuggling network within the state agency.

According to the entity, the arrests were the result of an investigation carried out over the last month by specialized intelligence and migration control units, which conducted tracking and surveillance tasks that allowed for the gathering of evidence regarding the activities of those involved.

The DGM explained that, at the time of the intervention, the employees were transporting 22 Haitian nationals in an irregular migratory status in vehicles belonging to the institution, for which they were immediately arrested and placed at the disposal of the competent authorities for the corresponding legal purposes.

The entity described the actions of those involved as a serious violation of the law and of the trust placed in public servants tasked with ensuring compliance with immigration regulations.

“The General Directorate of Migration maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding acts of corruption, the illicit trafficking of migrants, and any conduct that compromises institutional integrity,” the agency stated in a press release.

Likewise, he assured that he will fully collaborate with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and investigative bodies to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice and face the sanctions established by current legislation.

The institution highlighted that this case is the result of strengthening its internal supervision, control, and vetting mechanisms, implemented with the purpose of detecting and eradicating illicit practices within its ranks.

Finally, the DGM reaffirmed its commitment to continue strengthening its intelligence, inspection, and internal control capabilities to prevent and combat the illicit trafficking of migrants, in coordination with the other security and defense agencies of the State.
