Santo Domingo.- The Central Electoral Board (JCE) clarified this Thursday the doubts that persisted in the citizenry about the delivery of the new identity and electoral card, confirming that the issuance and distribution process will begin on April 8 nationwide.

The president of the JCE, Román Jáquez Liranzo, explained that the contracted company will use high-quality materials for the elaboration of the new plastic, which will significantly extend its validity period. According to him, the main objective is to prevent the more than 9.4 million citizens from having to renew the document simultaneously. “We will not have a massive expiration of all IDs in the Dominican Republic; the expiration will be progressive over time and it will not be necessary to summon the entire population at the same time,” the magistrate assured. Jáquez Liranzo highlighted that the new document will represent a medium and long-term saving for the State, due to its greater resistance and security levels. “It will not be an expense, but an investment, due to the durability and protection of the information it offers,” he affirmed. According to the information provided, the validity of the new ID card will vary depending on the citizen’s age. People between 18 and 35 years old will have a validity period of 12 years, while those in the range of 36 to 60 years old must renew it 16 years after its issuance. In the case of minors who receive their ID card from the age of 16 years old, they must replace it when they reach the age of majority. The president of the JCE explained that one of the main differences of the new document is the material used. “The current ID is made of common plastic; the new one will be made of polycarbonate with nine layers, which guarantees high information security, makes its alteration impossible and prevents delamination,” he detailed. Furthermore, he specified that the new material offers greater resistance to heat and humidity, which will allow the ID card to have an approximate lifespan of 25 years.
