Santo Domingo.– The National Office for Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie) reports that, through its Southern Delegation, and in coordination with the Governor’s Office of Bahoruco Province and the Neiba Municipal City Hall, it will convene public sector authorities and civil society representatives to work together to mitigate seismic risk and vulnerability in buildings, infrastructure, and vital lifelines in the province.
The initiative seeks to strengthen the population’s preparedness for the possible occurrence of seismic events, promoting actions aimed at prevention, civic education, and inter-institutional coordination. As part of these efforts, the preventive campaign “Voices that Prevent” was socialized, a proposal focused on raising community awareness about the importance of adopting preventive measures that contribute to protecting lives and assets.
During a meeting held at the Bahoruco Provincial Government office, the governor María Esther Díaz Medina, together with Jeferson Reyes Díaz, representing the mayor of Neiba, Yadel Antonio Suberví, learned about the scope of the initiative and expressed their support for the actions that will be developed for the benefit of the province.

In this first approach, the authorities exchanged experiences and approaches regarding the main challenges facing Bahoruco in terms of prevention and risk management. Likewise, they agreed on the need to strengthen coordination mechanisms to effectively address the effects of natural phenomena, especially seismic events.

Participants highlighted that prevention constitutes the most effective tool to protect human lives and reduce material losses. In that sense, they valued the creation of spaces for dialogue, training, and awareness that allow for strengthening local capacities and improving the response to potential emergencies.
Governor María Esther Díaz reported that, to ensure the success of the event, all sectors of the province will be summoned, including engineers, architects, and surveyors grouped in the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (Codia), as well as public school principals, representatives of private schools, neighborhood associations, merchants, and the media.
For his part, Miguel López, in charge of the Southern Delegation of Onesvie and representative of the institution’s general director, engineer Leonardo Reyes Madera, explained that “Voices that Prevent” incorporates an important educational component aimed at raising the level of public awareness regarding the need to know, adopt, and disseminate preventive measures that allow for an adequate response to the eventual occurrence of a major earthquake.
