Santiago. – The Santiago City Council, through the Council of Aldermen, approved the designation of 13th street in the Los Jardines sector with the name of doctor
Américo Espinal Hued, in recognition of his outstanding legal, political and academic career, as well as his contributions to the democratic institutionalism of the country.
The decision was adopted unanimously through
Resolution No. 3477-25, during the ordinary session of October 30, 2025 (minutes No. 22-25), after accepting the favorable report of the Standing Committee on Education and Culture, chaired by councilman
Frank Medina.

Mayor
Ulises Rodríguez highlighted that the designation honors the memory of an exemplary Santiago native who served the country from important public functions, including judge of the Land Tribunal, senator of the Republic, governor of Santiago and Attorney General of the Republic.
“With this designation, Santiago pays tribute to a man who dedicated his life to law and the strengthening of democratic institutions,” he expressed.

Frank Medina, proponent of the initiative, highlighted the commitment of the Council of Aldermen and the Mayor’s Office to recognize citizens who have contributed to the democratic and social development of the nation.
On behalf of the family,
Nelson Espinal, son of the honoree, thanked for the distinction and valued the symbolism of a street bearing his father’s name as part of the collective memory of the city.

Edwin Espinal, and personalities from the academic and social fields attended the event.
CareerAmérico Espinal Hued was born in Santiago de los Caballeros on September 10, 1927. He was a lawyer graduated from the Universidad de Santo Domingo, with studies in Banking Legislation, administration and finance. He served as a constitutionalist senator during the April Revolution of 1965 and Attorney General of the Republic between 1984 and 1986. In addition, he was a columnist for the
Listín Diario for more than two decades. He died on February 5, 2016, at the age of 88.
With this designation, the City Council of Santiago permanently inscribes the legacy of Américo Espinal Hued in the urban geography of the city where he was born.
