Santo Domingo.- Early this Tuesday, December 23rd, the main streets and avenues of the Dominican capital show a notable decongestion of vehicles, which has allowed drivers and transport users to move more quickly and without the usual lines of vehicles that characterize the days prior to the end-of-year festivities.
Although the flow of vehicles usually increases during the Christmas period due to last-minute shopping, family errands and intercity travel, this morning traffic has been light on several of the city’s main corridors, with little congestion on arteries that normally record high levels of traffic during peak hours.
This behavior differs from other festive times where traffic is considerably complicated, as has happened in recent dates in which avenues such as John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln or 27 de Febrero have experienced slow traffic and prolonged traffic jams due to the high demand for travel.
Various drivers circulating through central sectors report that the usual routes are clear and with a more orderly vehicular flow than expected for this time of year, which has contributed to shorter travel times and a more agile experience for those who leave early from their homes to their workplaces or scheduled activities.
The current traffic behavior could also be influenced by changes in mobility patterns during the Christmas season, where many citizens advance their commutes at non-traditional times or choose to stay home in the early morning hours, which reduces the pressure on the main roads.
For now, the feeling among drivers and pedestrians is one of traffic tranquility in a large part of the city, although the recommendation to maintain caution and attention at the wheel remains as the day progresses, as vehicular flow may intensify as the midday and afternoon hours approach.
