SAN JOSÉ. — Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who as the teenage son Theo Huxtable in “The Cosby Show” was central to a cultural phenomenon that helped define the 1980s, died at age 54 in an accidental drowning in Costa Rica, authorities said Monday.
The Judicial Investigation Department of Costa Rica said Warner drowned on Sunday afternoon on a beach on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. “He was rescued by people on the beach”, said the initial report from the department, paramedics from the Costa Rican Red Cross found him with no vital signs and he was taken to the morgue.
Warner created many television moments etched in the memory of Generation X children and their parents, including a discussion in the pilot episode with Cosby about grades and careers, and another episode where Theo tries in vain to hide his ear piercing from his father.
