Cosby was the first African American to star in a television drama.
Los Angeles. – A California jury ordered comedian Bill Cosby on Monday to pay $19.25 million to a victim he drugged and sexually assaulted more than five decades ago, after inviting her to one of his performances in Los Angeles.
The ruling is in relation to the lawsuit filed by Donna Motsinger, who alleged that Cosby drugged and raped her in 1972, after they met at a restaurant in Northern California.
The woman claimed that Cosby offered her a glass of wine while they were traveling in a limousine and then she intermittently lost consciousness.
For his part,
the comedian maintained that the sexual encounter was consensual.
Cosby, 88 years old, did not testify at the trial, which influenced the jury to rule in favor of the woman.
Motsinger stated before the court that it took 54 years to obtain justice and for her to be believed and not Bill. “
I know this (verdict) is not complete for the rest of the women, but I hope it serves them some good“, according to information cited by The New York Times.
The failure occurs just as the former actor has said he is facing economic difficulties.
The comedian went to prison in 2018 for sexually abusing Canadian Andrea Constand, becoming the first celebrity imprisoned in the ‘Me Too’ era.
Cosby was released in 2021 after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his conviction due to a prior civil agreement in which he compensated the victim. The comedian still faces several civil lawsuits related to the sexual abuse allegations.
