Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson evoke the Super Bowl scandal in a docuseries

Justin Timberlake will premiere a four-part docuseries on Apple TV in December in which Janet Jackson will address the controversial 2004 Super Bowl incident. Three sources confirmed the existence of the project, described as a tell-all and directed by Fisher Stevens.

The documentary’s content will center on the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show on February 1, 2004, when Timberlake pulled Jackson’s dress and exposed her right breast to millions of live viewers. From that moment, the expression wardrobe malfunction was born, which entered everyday vocabulary.

The consequences of the incident were not the same for the two artists. Jackson was banned from radio stations and her career suffered a blow from which it took time to recover, while Timberlake faced few repercussions and returned to the Super Bowl halftime show as a solo artist in 2017.

The docuseries will also include references to Britney Spears‘ recent comments about Timberlake, according to one of the sources consulted.

The 2004 Super Bowl scandal

In 2021, following the release of the documentary Framing Britney Spears, the singer issued a public apology in which he acknowledged having failed both artists. “The industry is flawed. It is set up for men, especially white men, to succeed,” Timberlake wrote.

“Due to my ignorance, I did not recognize it for all that it was while it was happening in my own life, but I do not want to benefit again from others being harmed,” he added.

In that same text, he acknowledged having spoken disrespectfully about Spears after the couple’s breakup in 2002.

“I am deeply aware that at certain moments in my life my actions contributed to the problem, that I spoke out of turn or did not speak up when I should have,” the artist wrote on that occasion.

The documentary arrives during a period of low public exposure for Timberlake. His latest album, Everything I Thought It Was, was released in March 2024 and reached the fourth spot on the Billboard 200.

The promotional tour, Forget Tomorrow World Tour, concluded in July 2025, and since then the artist has had a limited presence on the music scene, with the exception of a collaboration with rapper Quavo on the song “House Music”, released in October 2026.

During that tour, his stage performance raised questions among the audience. In July 2025, Timberlake revealed that he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease.

“Living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically,” she wrote in a statement. “When I received the diagnosis, I was surprised. But at least I could understand why I was on stage in enormous nerve pain or feeling intense fatigue or discomfort,” she added.

The tour was also preceded by a legal incident. In June 2024, Timberlake was arrested by police in Sag Harbor, New York, after running a stop sign and swerving out of his lane.

Arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, he ended up pleading guilty to a lesser charge of impaired driving and was sentenced to 25 hours of community service.

“It has been a difficult week. I know that sometimes I am difficult to love, but you continue to love me,” she told her followers at one of the tour’s concerts.

Justin Timberlake has a prior relationship with Apple: he starred in the platform’s 2021 original film Palmer. Representatives for the singer, Jackson, and Apple did not respond to requests for comment. Source: Infobae
