King Charles III has decided that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, will be treated as “private citizens” during their stay in the United Kingdom and will not be permitted to represent the royal family, according to an official letter from the monarch cited by The Telegraph.
Lord Benyon, Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household, sent the communication to senior government officials, military leaders and lords lieutenant following “numerous requests for guidance” regarding the Sussexes’ public status after their return to the country.
The letter reportedly states that Harry and Meghan may not use the titles “His/Her Royal Highness,” which have remained suspended since 2020. It also specifies that any charitable work carried out by the couple is a personal matter and would be conducted in their private capacity.
The king’s position is described as being similar to that of private citizens with commercial and charitable interests, reiterating the arrangements established when Harry and Meghan stepped back from their official royal duties six years ago.
The couple has reportedly returned to the United Kingdom with their two children for what has been described as a “prolonged” stay. Sources close to the Sussexes have said they want to resume their charitable work.
