The American rapper Sean Combs, better known as P. Diddy, was sentenced this Friday to 50 months in prison, equivalent to four years and two months, for two counts of transporting people for the purpose of prostitution.

What did the defense expect?

The artist’s legal team advocated for a light sentence, no more than 14 months, pointing out that he has already served 13 months in pre-trial detention after being denied bail of 50 million dollars.

Before his sentence was known, the rapper wrote a letter to the judge presiding over his case, apologizing for his actions. “First of all, I want to apologize and express my sincere regret for all the harm and pain I have caused others with my conduct. I take full responsibility for my past mistakes,” reads the letter.

A complex legal process

Combs was found guilty in July of two misdemeanor counts, related to transportation for prostitution, but was acquitted of more serious charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy to extort, which could have earned him a life sentence. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and is expected to appeal his conviction. The rapper remains detained in a Brooklyn (New York) jail since his arrest in September 2024.
