At least eight agents of the National Civil Police of Guatemala died this Sunday, while around 11 are injured amid the disturbances that originated the previous day in three prisons in the country, organized by the Barrio 18 gang, local media report.

So far, the authorities have managed to regain control of Renovación 1, and have neutralized gang member Aldo Dupie Ochoa Mejía, alias ‘El Lobo’, leader of Barrio 18, who was identified as the coordinator of the riots. The other prisons remain taken by the inmates. David Custodio Boteo, director general of the National Civil Police, announced a maximum alert nationwide and ordered the reinforcement of personal security measures and at police headquarters.In light of the acts of violence, the Ministry of Education of the country suspended classes nationwide tomorrow “as a preventive measure” and under the recommendation of the security authorities. Likewise, public transport was suspended in a large part of the capital.
