“A miracle”: 10-month-old baby survives after swallowing 3.5-centimeter nail

A 10-month-old baby in Paraguay was discharged from the hospital without injuries after swallowing a metal nail measuring approximately 3.5 centimeters. The child was treated at the Fundación Tesai hospital, where doctors successfully removed the object through an endoscopic procedure.
According to local media reports, the baby’s parents took him to the Hernandarias District Hospital after he developed an unusual cough. An X-ray revealed the nail inside his body, prompting doctors to transfer him for emergency treatment.
The object had reached the first section of the baby’s intestine but had not caused any organ damage or perforation. Doctors were able to remove it successfully, and the child was discharged.
“The baby is doing well and has been discharged after undergoing an endoscopic procedure,” physician Fernando Bittinger said, according to La Nación.
Bittinger described the outcome as a “miracle” and stressed that swallowing foreign objects can have much more serious consequences if medical attention is delayed.
