Boluarte announces the construction of a prison on a Peruvian island that was a terrorist prison
Lima,.– The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, announced this Sunday the construction of a prison on El Frontón Island, located seven kilometers from the central coast of the country, a place that in the past housed prisoners for terrorism and politicians in order to resolve the overcrowding of prisons, after an inspection of the place accompanied by ministers of State.
Boluarte supervised the area that will be used for the construction of the El Frontón penitentiary, which will allow to house 2,000 high-risk inmates, under the special and closed special regimes, indicated the Presidency of the Republic on its X social network account.
In the shared images, the president tours part of the destroyed facilities of the former El Frontón prison, which was closed during the first government of former President Alan García (1985-1990) after a prison riot by terrorists that was controlled by the armed forces and left dozens dead.
However, that old prison also housed political prisoners, such as former President Fernando Belaúnde Terry (1963-1968) (1980-1985) and Trotskyist leader Hugo Blanco in the 60s-70s, after having been a penal colony since the 19th century.
During her visit to the island, Boluarte told the media that accompanied her that her government assumes that “firm and brave” decision of the construction of the El Frontón prison “in the shortest possible time”.
He added that this construction “will surely not solve the overcrowding” in the country’s prisons, and for that reason they are also looking for other spaces where other prisons can be built technically and legally.
“In that joint work between ministries, the important thing is to do things, and do things well, but also in the time that corresponds to doing (…). Things are done now, because now is when they are needed,” added the governor.
“Government makes brave decisions against criminality!”, highlighted the Presidency of Peru in the message shared on its social media.
Boluarte indicated that next Wednesday the Executive will sign an agreement for the Army to take charge of cleaning the area where the new penitentiary establishment will be built.
The Head of State made the visit accompanied by the Ministers of Justice and Human Rights, Juan José Santiváñez; Defense, Walter Astudillo; Interior, Carlos Malaver; Education, Morgan Quero, and Housing, Construction and Sanitation, Durich Whittembury.
