Christa Pike’s lawyers warned cancer-related condition could complicate lethal injection

Lawyers representing Christa Pike, the Tennessee death row inmate who reportedly survived two lethal injection attempts, had warned months earlier that a rare medical condition possibly linked to cancer could put her at risk during an execution.
According to court documents cited by People magazine, Pike’s defense filed a complaint on January 8, 2026, warning that her condition could interfere with the drugs used in lethal injections and cause additional suffering.
Her attorneys argued that proceeding with the execution under those medical circumstances could violate the First, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
The complaint raised concerns about the potential effects of the execution drugs on Pike’s health and the possibility of unnecessary suffering.
