Cuba receives a flight with 136 deportees from the United States
Havana.- Cuba received a flight with 136 deportees from the United States in the ninth operation of this type recorded so far this year and in accordance with the current bilateral migration agreements, state media reported this Friday.
Four of the people in the group – of 125 men and 11 women – “were transferred to the investigation body for being alleged perpetrators of criminal acts before leaving the country,” according to the report from the Ministry of the Interior replicated in the official media.
Cuban authorities specified that so far, there have been 37 returns of migrants from different nations in the region this year, with 1,140 people, the majority (999) from the United States.
Furthermore, they reiterated that the island ratifies “its commitment to regular, safe and orderly migration,” while warning of the “danger and life-threatening conditions” posed by illegal departures from the country.
The governments of Havana and Washington have a bilateral agreement for all migrants arriving by sea to US territory to be deported to the Caribbean country.
On the other hand, deportation flights that had been suspended since 2020 were resumed at the end of April 2023, mainly for Cubans considered “inadmissible” after being detained at the border with Mexico.
According to data from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) of the U.S., during the 2024 fiscal year, which ended last September 30, 217,615 Cubans arrived in the United States.
In recent years, Cuba has registered an unprecedented migratory exodus due to the severe economic crisis it is suffering, with shortages of food, medicine, and fuel, rampant inflation, frequent and prolonged power outages, and a partial dollarization of the economy.
